Manufacturing Engineer - Automated Optical Inspection (AOI)/Optical Metrologist

Staff level engineer will be directly involved with development, implementation, and support of Metrology and Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) toolsets, supporting package fabrication for industry leading power component solutions.  Tool output to be utilized for real time SPC and to drive design and process improvements throughout the factory.    

Responsibilities

  • Developing, qualifying and programming, in-line metrology and AOI processes used for PCB, SMT, and over molded package technologies.
  • Drives change with legacy and new technology products, identifying process variability and working with manufacturing teams on tracking improvements, driving down production cost, and improving yield
  • Writes qualification reports and prepares presentations for peer review covering process improvement activities to support technologies being developed that our customers use in applications such as cloud servers, autonomous vehicles, military and industrial equipment.
  • Supports the organizational goal of Automotive Readiness in preparation for IATF 16949 Certification.
  • Monitor line yield, scrap and equipment utilization on a daily basis.   Disposition materials as appropriate.
  • Work independently as well as lead cross-functional development teams.  Uses the DMAIC process.
  • Work with Design, Test, and Quality Engineering to implement yield and quality enhancements
  • Work with hourly production and maintenance personnel to improve line performance
  • Review all new product designs for compatibility with process capability.  Make appropriate recommendations on new designs.
  • Identify and analyze data for trends
  • Initiate and approve manufacturing documentation
  • Investigate problems, determine root cause, and implement corrective and preventative actions
  • Expected to be hands on with equipment, including occasional maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Will have opportunity to learn other back end processes such as drilling, water jetting, and laser imaging.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering or Computer Science.  Master’s degree is a plus.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience with electronics packaging and/or a manufacturing.  Post graduate research experience in an academic setting will count towards industry experience.
  • Proven expertise with implementing AOI inspection and/or metrology equipment. Experience with KLA, Cyberoptics, Koh Young, and other machine vision systems considered a plus.
  • Experience with database infrastructure and servers for AOI based tools.
  • Experience with the Automotive Requirements such as IATF 16949 Certification, PPAP, BIQ, FTQ considered a plus.
  • Experience using design based software systems.  Examples include Solid Works, Pro Engineer, or Auto CAD. 
  • Familiarity with advanced packaging and processing strategies for system in a package devices (SIP) incorporating high layer count laminate (PCB) and ceramic substrates, ferrites, flip chips, BGA’s, lead-free soldering, MSL, transfer molding and encapsulation, high current interconnects a plus but can be taught.
  • Solid skills in problem solving and implementation of Six Sigma
  • Ability to understand, analyze, and resolve moderately complex technical problems
  • 10-15% travel may be required to support Vicor AOI process being performed at a manufacturing partner site in Charlestown NH.
