In-depth guide to thermal design for power designers

Thermal design is important for several reasons:

• High-power systems generate more heat.
• Designing temperatures to match the component's temperature tolerances and avoiding operational shutdowns.
• Proper thermal design is essential to consistently achieve the desired performance.

Power delivery networks (PDNs) built with Vicor power modules offer liquid cooling options and power loss reduction features, making thermal management much easier than power supply designs built with discrete components.

Another reason is that Vicor modules feature a package design that consolidates the losses scattered throughout the circuit into a single point, making heat dissipation easy to predict.

This seminar will explain thermal design that ensures reliability while efficiently dissipating heat within limited space and cost.

After earning a bachelor's degree from Tokyo University of Science, Koji gained over 26 years of experience at semiconductor and electronics manufacturers such as ROHM Semiconductor and ON Semiconductor before joining Vicor in 2022. Currently, as a Senior Applications Engineer, Koji is involved in the development of cutting-edge power systems with customers in a wide range of applications including industrial equipment, robotics, and aerospace and defense.
