Accelerate vehicle electrification

Accelerate vehicle electrification

Automotive OEMs are setting aggressive goals to electrify their vehicle fleets over the next 5-10 years. To do that, they need to overcome hurdles, not the least of which is how to deliver nearly 20 times the electric power compared to existing internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles without taking up valuable package space and adding costly weight. They need to ensure that every EV is compatible with DC fast charging stations along the highway to eliminate range anxiety. And they need to show consumers that EVs have all the comfort, safety, and performance of ICE vehicles. Vicor is partnering with OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers to help them overcome these hurdles using innovative modular power delivery networks (PDNs).

A new approach to power delivery architectures

Power density

The size and weight of power electronics have a direct bearing on vehicle performance. Leverage smaller, lighter power solutions to go further and faster.

Flexibility and scalability

OEM designers are challenged with evolving power delivery requirements. Quickly implement standardized solutions across a wide range of vehicles.

Re-usability

Qualification and approval of electronic components make vehicle development time-consuming. A modular, building-block approach saves time, resources, allowing you to get in front of the electrification race.

More power in less space

One of the central challenges facing the automotive industry is the need for more power in less space. EVs employ over 50kW of electrical power, compared to less than 3kW in an ICE vehicle. The nearly 20x increase in power requires compact power solutions to free up space and weight. Reducing the size and weight of the power delivery network are essential factors. For example, 2.5kW of power from the Vicor BCM6135 can be held in the palm of your hand and weighs only 65 grams. Learn more about Vicor automotive products.
